Sales Is a Judgment Game.
Before Cardinal, I was an early GTM hire at two startups. Both sold to technical teams.
The products had almost nothing in common. But the buyer was basically the same person. Same titles, same team shapes, same objections showing up on calls. So you'd think the way we built pipeline would at least rhyme.
Nope.
At one, everything ran through the founders. They were the brand. My job, and the other reps' jobs, was to keep that brand alive. We ghostwrote their LinkedIn. We kept their voice consistent. We made sure the DMs never went cold. And behind all of that, we were hand-juggling multiple inboxes. No source of truth anywhere. Just tabs. So many tabs. I can still feel that little spike of dread of not knowing which inbox had the reply we'd been chasing for a week.
Did it work? Yeah, honestly, it did. But it worked because people were grinding, not because anything about it was designed to work.
The other startup, same buyer, and I mean the same buyer, ran a completely different play. Different tools, different rhythm, different everything. And that worked too.
That messed with my head for a while. Because everything you read about GTM implies there's a right way to do this. There isn't. There's just the way that fits your team, your product, and how your buyer actually wants to be sold to. Two companies can chase the identical customer with engines that look nothing alike, and both can win. I watched it happen.
That's really what Cardinal is about, for me at least.
Because here's what most GTM tools do, quietly, without asking: they decide your motion for you. You sign up, they hand you a workflow, they call it best practice. Sequence goes out. Follow-ups are templated. Everyone's outbound starts looking like everyone else's outbound. And nobody sat down and chose any of it. The tool just became the strategy.
I think that's exactly backwards. The motion is the strategic decision. Founder-led or rep-led. LinkedIn-heavy or email-heavy. High-touch or high-volume. Or a balance of all? Those choices should be yours, made on purpose, and the tools should bend around them. Not the other way around.
The reps I worked with were some of the hardest-working people I've ever been around. And they still burned hours every single week doing by hand what a machine should've been doing, because nothing in the stack was built around how they actually worked. They were serving the tools. It should've been the tools serving them.
So that's the gap I care about now. Not more automation for its own sake. The right automation, wrapped around a motion you picked yourself, because it fits who you are and who you sell to.
You decide what your motion is. Don't let a stack of tools tell you what to do.
